My Investment Portfolio (April 2017)

STI closed the month flat as compared to last month. Uncertainty in the markets prevented it from moving higher, though there is some recovery towards the end of the month. The usual concerns were there - French elections, US political uncertainty and North Korea. Tech stocks (especially those with exposure to automotive and semiconductor sectors) continued to do well.

For this month, I have attended the following AGMs/EGMs/briefings - SP Corp, CapitaLand Mall Trust, Far East Hospitality Trust, CapitaLand Commercial Trust, Colex, Ascott Residence Trust, CapitaLand Retail China Trust, Far East Orchard, OUE Hospitality Trust, GK Goh, CapitaLand, SBS Transit, City Developments, Delfi, Samudera, Yanlord, Frencken, Sabana Reit and Kingboard Copper Foil.

For my top 30 holdings, not much changes this month as there is not much news flow with AGMs going on for most companies except for Amara and Hong Leong Finance whereby research houses initiated reports on these companies. With some companies going ex-dividend already, interest in these holdings might go down a bit unless there is significant news flow. I have added my position in some of these holdings though.

I have bought the following companies from the market this month - AV Jennings, Far East Orchard, GuocoLand, Heeton, Hong Leong Finance, iFAST, Isetan, K1 Ventures, SingPost, Singapore Reinsurance and YHI. No sell trade was done.

I have accepted the following voluntary delisting/cash offers this month - AIM and Global Premium Hotels. My stake in ARA Asset Management was also being acquired via scheme of arrangement.

I have also participated in the following scrip dividend scheme - Global Investments.

Next month will be another quiet month. I will continue to go through those annual reports that I have missed out last month and catch up with some of my readings on investment.

Hi GHChua

Can you share the rationale behind buying the following companies?

Hong Leong Finance - The price has shot up and it seems to be expensive.

K1 Ventures - Expected to be liquidated. Do you still see the value?

GuocoLand - Debt is more than Market capitalization. Isn't it risky?

Thank you in advance.

Hi JTK,

Hong Leong Finance - It is still trading below NTA though I understand that a research house had initiated coverage on it. I have bought the stock from unit share market and therefore the price is much lower than the normal board lot share market.

K1 Ventures - I expect its liquidation value per share to be higher than its current trading price, which explains my purchase.

GuocoLand - Not really. As more of their developments had been completed and cash being collected, plus recurring income from Tanjong Pagar Center, it should have a better cash position to buffer their debt position.

Hi Ghchua,

Do you find going through the annual report of so many listed companies (which you have stake in) very taxing?

I find it quite tired going through these reports. I do it during the night (weekdays) and weekends which are outside my working hours.

Hi Ben,

Unfortunately, there is no short cut to investment success. Going through the annual reports is a must if you are a serious investor. If you feel tired after reading for a while, maybe you can go out for a jog or do something else before coming back to complete your readings. The key is to do it at your own pace. Don't rush it as you might miss out on some important stuff in those reports.

I know it is tough doing it part-time and I have experienced it before. That is why I am now a full-time investor and at least I have control on my time.

I forgot to accept the global premium hotel offer and the offer lapses. What should I do?

Hi Unknown,

Don't worry about it. They have secured enough shares and will compulsory acquired your shares and pay you the offer price.
